Aadhar Card Official Website: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 (“Aadhaar Act 2016”) on 12 July 2016 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Hence the Aadhaar Act 2016 has been amended by the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Act, 2019 (14 of 2019) w.e.f. 25.07.2019. aadhar card ki official website

UIDAI was created to issue Unique Identification numbers (UID), named “Aadhaar”, to all residents of India. Also, the UID had to be (a) robust enough to eliminate duplicate and fake identities, and (b) verifiable and authenticable in an easy, cost-effective way. As on 31st October 2021, the Authority has issued 131.68 crore Aadhaar numbers to the residents of India.

Under the Aadhaar Act 2016, UIDAI is responsible for Aadhaar enrolment and authentication, including operation and management of all stages of the Aadhaar life cycle, developing the policy, procedure, and system for issuing Aadhaar numbers to individuals and performing authentication and the security of identity information and authentication records of individuals.

Historical Background

On March 03, 2006, approval was given by the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India for the project titled ‘Unique Identification for BPL Families. Accordingly, a Processes Committee was set up on July 03, 2006, to suggest the process for updating, modification, addition, and deletion of data and fields from the core database to be created under the Unique Identification for BPL Families project. Hence this Committee, on November 26, 2006, prepared a paper known as ‘Strategic Vision Unique Identification of Residents. Based thereupon, the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) was set up on December 04, 2006, to collate the National Population Register under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Unique Identification Number project of the Department of Information Technology.

Before its establishment as a statutory authority, UIDAI was functioning as an attached office of the then Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog) vide its Gazette Notification No.-A-43011/02/2009-Admn.I) dated 28th January 2009. The first UID number was issued on 29 September 2010 to a resident of Nandurbar, Maharashtra. On 12 September 2015, the Government revised the Allocation of Business Rules to attach the UIDAI to the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY) of the then Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Features of Aadhaar

Uniqueness

This is achieved through the process of demographic and biometric de-duplication. The de-duplication process compares the resident’s demographic and biometric information, collected during the process of enrolment, with the records in the UIDAI database to verify if the resident is already in the database or not. An individual needs to enrol for Aadhaar only once and after de-duplication, only one Aadhaar shall be generated. In case, the resident enrols more than once, the subsequent enrolments will be rejected.

Portability

Aadhaar gives nationwide portability as it can be authenticated anywhere online. This is critical as millions of Indians migrate from one state to another or from rural areas to urban centres etc.

Random number

An aadhaar number is a random number devoid of any intelligence. Therefore a person willing to enrol has to provide minimal demographic; along with biometric information during the enrolment process. So the Aadhaar enrolment process does not capture details like caste, religion, income, health, geography, etc.

Scalable technology architecture

The UID architecture is open and scalable. The Resident’s data is stored centrally and authentication; can be done online from anywhere in the country. Although the aadhaar Authentication service is built to handle 100 million authentications a day.

Open source technologies

Open-source architecture precludes dependence on specific computer hardware; specific storage, specific OS, specific database vendor, or any specific vendor technologies to scale. Therefore such applications are built using open source or open technologies and structured to address scalability in a vendor-neutral manner and allow the co-existence of heterogeneous hardware within the same application.

How can I see my Aadhar card details?

Also, by Using Enrollment Number: The resident can download e-Aadhaar using 28-digit enrolment no. along with Full Name and Pin code. Hence by Using Aadhaar No: Residents can download an e-Aadhaar by using 12 digits Aadhaar No; along with their Full Name and Pin code.

Can I order my Aadhar card online?

Also, it can be ordered online through uidai.gov.in or resident.uidai.gov.in using an Aadhaar number; Virtual ID or Enrolment ID and paying a nominal charge of Rs. 50/

How many days it will take to update Aadhaar?

Normally 90% of the update request is completed within 30 days. So there is no restriction on the number of Aadhaars which can be linked with the same mobile number

Can I get a plastic Aadhaar card?

So it can be ordered online through; uidai.gov.in or resident.uidai.gov.in using an Aadhaar number; Virtual ID, or Enrolment ID and paying a charge of Rs. 50/-. PVC Aadhaar Card is delivered to the resident’s address by speed post.

How many times Aadhaar address can be updated?
